Zoro's rival, he is currently a Shichibukai and the World's Greatest Swordsman.
Shanks is one of the Yonkou, and the man who inspired Luffy to become a pirate. He also used to duel Mihawk before he lost his left arm.

And we recently learned Mihawk could beat Shanks in swordplay, which arguably makes him Yonko level.
